IV Health

Our IV Therapy Process

Most people booking an IV drip (also called an infusion) want to know one thing first: what actually happens when you walk in? At IV Health Sunshine Coast, nothing is administered until a nurse has reviewed your history and a practitioner has confirmed it is clinically appropriate. Here is each step, in order.

What Happens Before Your First IV Infusion

Every IV journey starts before any cannula is placed.

Every new patient completes a consultation with a registered nurse, followed by a telehealth consultation with one of our integrative medical practitioners. This sequence exists for a reason.

Intravenous nutrients are prescribed, and safe prescribing requires a clinician who understands your health history, your current medications, and what you are hoping to support.

Baseline blood testing is often recommended so decisions can be made with a clearer picture of your current levels. Whether this is appropriate for you is discussed during your nurse consultation.

This careful process helps ensure your infusion is appropriate, individualised and aligned with your overall health needs.

The IV Health Sunshine Coast Process, Step by Step

Step 1: Nurse Consultation

A registered nurse will review your health history, medications and wellbeing goals, welcoming your questions and identifying anything that may affect your suitability early on. You can also access a complimentary 15-minute telehealth consultation with a nurse to discuss whether IV therapy may be appropriate for you.

Step 2: Practitioner Consultation and Clinical Scripting

An integrative medical practitioner confirms whether IV therapy is clinically appropriate for you, discusses the options available, and, where suitable, provides a personalised vitamin and nutrient prescription. This prescription is valid for 12 months, so if you return for further sessions within that time, this step usually does not need to be repeated unless additional vitamins or nutrients are required that were not included in your original script.

Step 3: Your Session

Your infusion is administered by a registered nurse in a calm, monitored environment using single-use consumables. Where a booster has been prescribed, it may be given alongside the infusion. Most infusions run for 30–60 minutes, and boosters generally take around 10 minutes.

Step 4: Supplements

Where clinically appropriate, practitioner-recommended supplements may help maintain nutrient levels between therapies. These are available to clinic patients following consultation and are not a substitute for the assessment and prescription pathway outlined above.

Step 5: Follow Ups and Review

Follow-up sessions are scheduled as needed, with periodic reviews so your plan can be adjusted over time. Because individual needs and responses vary, session frequency is decided in consultation with your practitioner rather than set by a fixed schedule.

What to Expect During Your IV Therapy Session

You will be made comfortable in a recliner chair that has a massage function and a small cannula will be inserted by a registered nurse. Your infusion runs over a set period while you are monitored throughout. Many people choose to read, work quietly or simply rest during this time. Your nurse will explain each step as it happens and check in with you regularly.

If it is your first visit, please allow 60–90 minutes in total, as consultation and scripting are completed alongside your infusion. Once your script is in place, subsequent visits are usually considerably shorter.

Why Clinical Screening Comes First

Thorough screening is what distinguishes clinician-led IV therapy from a simple convenience service. By a registered nurse and integrative practitioner reviewing your health history and medications before treatment, potential contraindications can be identified and your formulation can be tailored to you, rather than chosen from a standard menu.

Every session uses single-use consumables and is conducted in a monitored setting. The team overseeing this process brings more than 40 years of combined experience in nursing, midwifery and integrative medicine.

Where Your IV Therapy Session Can Take Place

The clinical process is the same wherever you are treated. You can visit the Sippy Downs clinic, or arrange a mobile appointment to receive your infusion at a more convenient location. Mobile services depend on your location and clinician availability. IV Health Sunshine Coast also operates from additional sites, including Bundaberg, Monto and Crows Nest.

After Your Infusion

Our nurse will provide aftercare guidance specific to the formulation you received. In general:

Keep drinking water throughout the day to support circulation and nutrient distribution aim for 1-2 litres.

Choose whole, nutrient-dense meals to complement your infusion ie grilled salmon served with a quinoa and mixed vegetable salad (leafy greens, capsicum, tomato, cucumber, avocado) dressed with olive oil and lemon.

Rest if you need to. Gentle movement is fine, but avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting with the arm used for your infusion for the next 24 hours.

Reduce caffeine for the rest of the day because:

Minimise alcohol, as it can affect hydration and how nutrients are processed.

Caffeine can be dehydrating for some people, and good hydration supports circulation and nutrient distribution after IV therapy.

It is a stimulant and may increase heart rate or make it harder to notice how your body is truly feeling post-infusion (e.g. light-headedness, fatigue).

For some people, caffeine can irritate the stomach or increase jitteriness, which can be uncomfortable if you are already feeling a little “out of sorts” after treatment.

Keeping caffeine low for the rest of the day simply gives your body a calmer environment to adjust and recover.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our IV Therapy Process

It begins with a nurse consultation where we discuss your health history, current medications and what you are hoping to support. This is followed by a telehealth consultation with an integrative medical practitioner, who confirms clinical appropriateness and issues a personalised nutrient script. Only then is your session booked. During the session, a registered nurse administers your infusion or booster with continuous monitoring. Follow-up and periodic reviews are arranged where clinically appropriate.

Allow between 60 and 90 minutes for your first visit, as this includes your consultation, scripting and the session itself. Once your script is in place, subsequent visits are shorter. Most infusions run for 30–60 minutes and vitamin boosters take around 10 minutes. Session length varies with the formulation selected, and our team will confirm expected timing when you book.

No referral is required for vitamin and nutrient boosters or infusions. A referral is needed only for specific medical infusions such as iron. Baseline blood tests are not mandatory for everyone, but are often recommended so decisions can be made with a clearer picture of your current levels. A patient guide to baseline blood tests is available on our website. Whether testing is appropriate for you will be discussed during your nurse consultation and confirmed by the practitioner before any script is issued.

A practitioner consultation is needed because intravenous nutrients are prescribed, not selected from a menu. This consultation allows a qualified clinician to review your health history, medications and goals, and to confirm whether a particular formulation is clinically appropriate for you. It also provides an opportunity to identify any contraindications before anything is administered. This is the step that keeps your care individualised rather than generic.

You are settled into a calm treatment space and a registered nurse inserts a small cannula. The infusion runs over a set period while the nurse monitors you throughout. Single use consumables are used for every session. Where a booster has been scripted, it may be given alongside the infusion. You can read, work or rest. The nurse will talk you through each step as it happens.

An infusion delivers a larger volume of fluids, vitamins and minerals into your bloodstream over a longer period. A booster is a smaller, faster injection that delivers specific nutrients. Both are clinician-administered and both require a script. The option that best suits you depends on the nutrients identified during your consultation, your goals, and the time you have available.

Follow-up sessions are planned with your practitioner rather than set by a fixed timetable. Some people attend regularly, while others come periodically during more demanding periods. Many complete an initial series and then move to occasional maintenance sessions. How often you return will depend on how you are feeling as well as your budget. Your script is valid for 12 months, and reviews are scheduled as needed so your plan can be adjusted. Because individual needs and responses vary, all recommendations are made on a case-by-case basis.

Yes. The clinical process is the same whether you visit the Sippy Downs clinic one of our rural locations or book a mobile/home appointment. Consultation, practitioner scripting, monitored administration and follow up still apply. Mobile availability depends on your location and clinician scheduling, so please confirm when you enquire. IV Health Sunshine Coast also offers services from additional locations across Queensland.

After your infusion, it’s helpful to keep drinking water throughout the day (aim for at least 1-2 litres) , eat whole, nutrient-dense meals, and rest if you feel you need to. Gentle movement is fine, but it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Try to limit alcohol and excess caffeine for the rest of the day. Your nurse will also provide aftercare guidance specific to the formulation you received.

Supplements are designed to sit alongside your infusion plan, not replace any part of it. They may be offered after consultation to help maintain levels between therapies, but they are not a substitute for the infusion pathway. Supplements are only recommended where clinically appropriate, and any discussion about them happens with a clinician who already understands your history and current script.
