Practitioner-Scripted IV Infusion
A practitioner-scripted IV infusion at IV Health Sunshine Coast always begins with a nurse consultation and comprehensive screening, so your suitability is confirmed before anything is given. If you have surgery or a procedure planned, the advice of your surgeon and anaesthetist comes first, and we work within their instructions.
How This Infusion Works
Although this infusion appears on our menu, the formulation itself is tailored to you at your consultation. It delivers sterile fluids, with vitamins and nutrients where these are clinically appropriate and included in your script, directly into your bloodstream through an IV drip.
It is a fluid and nutrient infusion only. It is not a treatment for any health condition, it is not part of your surgical or post-operative care, and we do not claim that it helps wounds heal, shortens recovery or changes how you feel.
Surgery Planned? Check With Your Surgical Team First
Your surgeon and anaesthetist know your procedure, your medicines and your health history in detail. Their instructions come first, so please check with them before booking any IV treatment.
Questions worth asking your surgical team include:
- Fasting: what your fasting instructions are before your anaesthetic
- Vitamins and supplements: whether they would like you to pause any vitamins, supplements or infusions before your procedure, and for how long
- Medicines: whether an infusion could affect any medicine you take now or are given around your procedure
Please tell our nurse the date and type of any planned procedure at your consultation. If your surgical team advises against an infusion, or the timing is not right, your nurse tells you so and we do not go ahead.
After Surgery, Your Surgical Team Leads Your Care
An infusion does not replace the wound care, medicines, check-ups or other post-operative care your surgical team arranges, and it is not a way to manage pain, swelling or healing. Please follow their instructions and keep all of your follow-up appointments.
If you notice fever, increasing pain, redness, swelling or discharge around your wound, contact your surgical team or healthcare provider. If you have chest pain, difficulty breathing or sudden swelling in one leg, call 000 straight away.
Screening and Scripting Before Any Infusion
Comprehensive screening sits behind every session at IV Health Sunshine Coast. Before any infusion, a nurse reviews your health history, current medications, any planned procedures and your wellbeing goals. A medical practitioner with a special interest in integrative care then confirms whether treatment is clinically appropriate for you and, where suitable, issues a personalised prescription. For safety, every infusion is administered by a registered nurse.
Baseline blood tests are not mandatory for everyone, though they are often recommended, and your suitability is discussed at your nurse consultation and confirmed by the practitioner before a script is issued. You can take our pre-treatment blood test list to your healthcare provider if testing is suggested. No referral is required for this infusion.
A complimentary discovery call with a nurse via telehealth is available to help you decide whether this is a good fit for you. The call is free, there is no obligation to proceed, and it does not include scripting or treatment.
What to Expect When You Visit
Your first visit takes around 60 to 90 minutes because it includes your consultation and scripting. The full process is set out on our Our Process page.
Step 1: Nurse Consultation
Your nurse goes through your health history, medications, any upcoming procedures and your wellbeing goals with you. If anything you mention suggests you would be better supported by your surgical team or healthcare provider first, your nurse tells you so before going any further.
Step 2: Practitioner Consultation and Clinical Scripting
A medical practitioner with a special interest in integrative care confirms whether treatment is clinically appropriate for you and, where suitable, issues a personalised vitamin and nutrient prescription. Your script is valid for 12 months. If your health, your medicines or your procedure plans change, your nurse and practitioner review your health again before any further infusion.
Step 3: Your Infusion
A registered nurse administers your infusion in a monitored setting, using single-use consumables every session. An infusion usually runs for around 30 to 60 minutes, and your nurse checks on you throughout.
Step 4: Follow Up and Review
There is no set schedule. Because individual needs and responses vary, any further session is only considered in consultation with your practitioner, where it is clinically appropriate. If you have a procedure planned, your nurse pauses or changes your plan in line with your surgical team’s advice.
Understanding the Risks
Every infusion is administered by a registered nurse in a monitored environment. Our team brings many years of combined experience in nursing, midwifery and integrative medicine, and careful screening and prescribing sit at the centre of how we work.
As with any IV treatment, there are risks. Some people notice minor discomfort, bruising or redness at the cannula site. Less commonly, IV treatment can cause vein irritation, infection at the cannula site or a reaction to an ingredient in your formulation, and it is not suitable for everyone, including some people with heart or kidney conditions, people who take certain medicines and some people around the time of surgery. Your nurse talks you through the risks before your session.
After your session, your nurse talks you through some simple aftercare. Keep hydrating through the day, aiming for 1 to 2 litres of water unless your nurse, surgical team or healthcare provider has given you different instructions, eat whole, nutrient-dense meals, and rest if you need to. Keep to gentle movement and avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting with your infusion arm for 24 hours, minimise alcohol, and reduce caffeine for the rest of the day. Your nurse also provides aftercare specific to the formulation you receive.

Frequently Asked Questions
I Have Surgery Planned. Should I Tell You?
Yes. Please tell our nurse the date and type of your procedure. Your surgical team’s instructions come first, so check with them before booking any IV treatment. If they advise against it, or the timing is not right, we do not go ahead.
Will This Infusion Help Me Heal or Recover Faster?
No. This infusion is not a treatment for any health condition, and we do not claim that it helps wounds heal, shortens recovery or changes how you feel after surgery. Your recovery is guided by your surgical team, so please follow their advice.
What Goes Into My Infusion?
Your formulation is decided in consultation with your practitioner. It is based on sterile fluids, with vitamins and nutrients added only where they are clinically appropriate and included in your script. Your nurse and practitioner explain exactly what is in your infusion at your consultation.
Do I Need a Referral?
No referral is required. Like all our infusions, it is practitioner-scripted, which means a nurse and a medical practitioner with a special interest in integrative care will review your health and confirm whether treatment is appropriate before your session. If you have a procedure planned, please also check with your surgical team first.
Who Should Not Have This Infusion?
IV treatment is not suitable for everyone. Some heart or kidney conditions, certain medicines, allergies and the timing of a planned procedure may mean it is not appropriate for you, which is why your nurse reviews your health history, medications and any upcoming surgery first. If a nurse or one of our healthcare practitioners does not think IV nutrient therapies are suitable for you, they will let you know and recommend that you speak with your surgical team or healthcare provider.
How Long Does a Session Take?
An infusion usually runs for around 30 to 60 minutes. Your first visit takes a little longer, around 60 to 90 minutes in total, because it includes your nurse consultation and practitioner scripting.
What Does It Cost?
Because your formulation is decided at your consultation, the cost depends on what is included in your script and is confirmed with you before your session, so you know the full cost before you decide to go ahead. Additional consultation fees may apply for scripting and mobile visits.
Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?
Yes, as with any IV treatment. Minor discomfort, bruising or redness at the cannula site can occur. Less commonly, IV treatment can cause vein irritation, infection at the cannula site or a reaction to an ingredient in your formulation. This is why comprehensive screening comes before every session, and your nurse talks you through the risks, what to expect and your aftercare.

Questions Before You Book?
Our nurses are happy to talk it through with you. If you have a procedure planned, please check with your surgical team first. A complimentary discovery call with a nurse via telehealth to determine if this is a good fit for you is available, and there is no obligation to proceed. The call is free and does not include scripting or treatment.
